(whoops!)
Nothing much happening… except going to Europe for four weeks
For more on that, go read the blog of a much more dedicated blogger… http://www.drkellam.com. Meanwhile, let’s move to Martin’s Thought of the Day:
Why do electronic gadgets (a.k.a. toys) never come with charged batteries? What’s this “Before use, charge for 5 hours” or “charge overnight before use” crap? I’m sorry, when I’ve just forked out a fortune for a new toy, I want to play with it straight away, see what it can do… and charging it isn’t top of the list of things I want to try out! *grimble grumble*.
On the other hand, I now own an iPod which is nothing to be sneezed at. Even if I have to wait for it to charge up before I can use it. Grrrr.
(I shouldn’t really complain. I should go and do the ironing that’s still left over from tour that I’m putting off. I really should.)

Well, two comments here:
1. I recently bought an iPod mini on behalf of my brother and was very disappointed to find it had no power adapter - you have to use the computer to charge it. My normal iPod (4th-gen 40GB) not only came with one, but both a firewire and usb2 cable. You’d think that’s a good idea. As it stands, the iPod was plugged into USB1 (slooooow - not even 1.1) on a machine with 2 free FireWire ports. Nice. The power adapter is also $45. Accessories for the iPod are just a joke!
2. I then ordered an iBook (14″) with an Airport Extreme Base Station, also for my brother. Not only did the system come charged (although I still needed to fully charge and discharge to calibrate the battery, but that’s just for estimation purposes), but the OS was installed already and iWork was pre-installed even though I didn’t order it. You go to open it and you can either enter a serial number straight away or purchase online. SUCH a change from a year ago, when I bought my iBook 12″ and had to sit there changing 6 CDs just to install the base system, then update and all that jazz.
Good to see some progress.
Also, Apple now sends electronic invoices rather than those old dot-matrix printout things. One wonders what kind of ancient and inflexible ERP system they’re running…
